Named by P.D. James as one of the best five mysteries of all time, this novel follows Richard Cadogan, at loose ends in Oxford late at night, who is charmed by an old-fashioned toyshop's window display and finds the door unlocked. Slipping inside, he finds not a snoring toyman but a very dead old lady with marks of murder on her neck. When he returns with the police, the toyshop has disappeared, leaving a matter for Gervase Fen.
