In 2076, the starship Lancer, Earth's first, is on a mission to find interstellar civilizations in this 1984 novel by Gregory Benford. Astronaut Nigel Walmsley believes machines are the dominant intelligent beings left in the galaxy and intend to annihilate all organic life, and the crew discovers dead planets and A.I. warships before realizing Nigel is right — too late, as the machines have found Lancer and Earth.
