About “Bungo-no-Kuni Fudoki”

Fudoki, also known as ancient local gazetteers, were reports on provincial culture, geography, and oral traditions presented to Japanese monarchs. They include agricultural, geographical, and historical records, as well as mythology and folklore. These documents contain local myths, rituals, and poems not found in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, the primary sources of ancient Japanese mythology and history. The imperial court used Fudoki as part of its efforts to control provinces through administrative surveys, which were part of the ritsuryō codes implemented during national unification.
