The starship Enterprise (NX-01), commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer, has explored distant stars and made first contact with many alien races. The Paraagan deep-space colony was a routine mission, but it was unique because the society was matriarchal and the atmosphere contained a volatile gas. The crew followed procedures, closing plasma vents to avoid ignition. However, a massive explosion destroyed the colony, killing 3,600 people. The Enterprise crew wonders if they caused the disaster. Crewman Daniels, a mysterious figure from the 31st century, claims to be part of the Temporal Cold War and reveals that history was altered. He says no one died and the Enterprise was never recalled. Archer must prove the crew's innocence, but time is against them. The crew faces a dangerous and unpredictable battle against forces that manipulate history.
