About “Desolation Angels”
Desolation Angels is a semi-autobiographical novel by Jack Kerouac, part of his Duluoz Legend. Published in 1965, it was written earlier, during the time On the Road was being published. The story covers events from 1956 to 1957. The protagonist, Jack Duluoz, reflects Kerouac’s growing dissatisfaction with Buddhist philosophy and his complex feelings about fame and the Beat Generation. The novel also explores his relationships with friends like Allen Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, Lucienn Carr, and William S. Burroughs. It includes a relatively positive depiction of homosexuality, despite using language that was considered homophobic at the time. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
