John Dortmunder, a persistent heist-planner, is involved in an encyclopedia-selling scam that is about to fail. He is tired of carrying heavy encyclopedias and is looking for a new opportunity. When the cops arrive, his friend Kelp offers an escape and a job that seems too crazy to refuse. Kelp's nephew, an FBI washout, is a fan of old-time pulp novels and adventure stories. He had previously tried to be a cop but now wants to be a robber.
