Camber was the most powerful of the Deryni, a race of humans with magical mental abilities. In later stories, he became known as both a protector of humanity and a figure of dark magic. He longed for peace on his family's land, but his life was disrupted. The kingdom of Gwynedd suffered under the rule of King Imre and his sister Ariella, who persecuted normal humans. Camber failed to save his own son from Imre's cruelty. He discovered Cinhil Haldane, a descendant of the rightful human kings, and saw in him the only chance to end Imre's rule. Camber set out to find Cinhil and bring him into a dangerous fight for the throne.
