About “A Dirty Job”
Charlie Asher is a normal, somewhat neurotic man who runs a secondhand store in San Francisco with the help of a couple of eccentric employees. He is married to Rachel, who loves him for his reliability. When their daughter, Sophie, is born, Charlie encounters a strange man in mint-green golf clothes at the hospital. This man claims no one should be able to see him, but Charlie can. Soon after, Charlie experiences strange occurrences—people die around him, giant ravens appear, and strange names appear on his notepad. These names belong to people who soon die. It becomes clear that Charlie has been chosen for an unusual job: Death. Christopher Moore's 2006 novel explores death and dying with humor and heart.
