A never-before-published fantasy novel set in Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover universe. The story takes place on Darkover, a world that has remained isolated and protected from the technologically advanced Terran Empire. Now, the Empire is forming a Federation and extending an invitation for all worlds to join. Regis Hastur, leader of the most powerful of Darkover's seven Domains, learns of this change. While some of his people see the offer as beneficial, Regis fears that Darkover would lose its independence, becoming a military base and losing its resources. He resolves to fight to protect his world from this fate.
