Jonas Tallent, bored with London society, takes up managing his family's Devon estate and needs a new innkeeper. Genteel but impoverished Emily Beauregard applies and proves herself despite his initial refusal. Emily secretly searches the village for a family treasure using a cryptic rhyme, and Jonas aids her, but someone else is watching and later threatens her and her family.
