Justin's family are Time Traders. The summer before he starts college, he travels with them to a version of Virginia where the American states never unified and history is marked by small wars. He joins Randolph Brooks on a visit to the small town of Elizabeth, Virginia, planning to return home in a few days. Beckie Royer, from California, is in Virginia with her grandmother, who wants to revisit her hometown. She finds interest in Justin, who will soon leave. War breaks out between Virginia and Ohio, and Ohio releases a tailored virus. Virginia quarantines the town, trapping Becky, Justin, and Randolph. They watch as the town falls to plague and violence, with no help from Crosstime Traffic.
