As a blizzard swells before Christmas, the car of a retired judge's wife is found abandoned on a rural road, and the search-and-rescue team, which includes former sheriff Cork O'Connor, has little hope of finding her alive. Cork notices disturbing details, and after a friend's dog is killed and his own son comes close to peril, he realizes a vengeful force tied to a twenty-year-old murder is at work, one he investigated himself.
