About “Topeka Constitution”

The Topeka Constitutional Convention took place from October 23 to November 11, 1855, in Topeka, Kansas Territory, in a building later known as Constitution Hall. The convention produced the Topeka Constitution, which prohibited slavery in Kansas but also barred free blacks from residing in the territory. The event was organized by Free-Staters in response to the pro-slavery Territorial Legislature, which had been elected on March 5, 1855, under conditions marked by significant electoral fraud and the intimidation of Free State voters.
