Commissario Guido Brunetti receives a frantic call from the director of a prestigious Venetian library after pages are stolen from several rare books. Suspicion falls on an American professor who requested the volumes, but he fled the library and turns out not to exist. As suspects multiply, a theologian who had read at the library for years is found murdered.
