When Simone Hollingsworth misses bell ringing practice, the villagers of Fawcett Green are not surprised. Simone is known as pleasant, beautiful, and dull, having volunteered for many community activities but never sticking with any. The Brockleys, her neighbors, become concerned when they notice Simone's husband, Alan, acting strangely—slamming doors, burying boxes in the garden, and keeping the curtains closed. Despite their suspicions, they do not discover the real reason for Simone's disappearance.
