Picking up in Seville in 1626, Captain Alatriste and his protege Inigo Balboa return from the siege of Breda battle-weary and short of cash. Alatriste receives an offer, from the king himself, to recruit swordsmen for a risky job involving contraband gold and a guarded Spanish galleon, with the Spanish Crown's dominion over American wealth at stake.
