Battle Royale is a Japanese dystopian horror novel written by journalist Koushun Takami. It is his only novel, completed in 1996 but published in 1999. The story follows junior high school students who are forced to fight each other to the death by a fictional fascist, totalitarian government called the Republic of Greater East Asia.
