About “Imaginary Worlds – the Art of Fantasy”
Imaginary Worlds: the Art of Fantasy is a study of the modern literary fantasy genre written by Lin Carter. It was first published in 1973 as the fifty-eighth volume in Ballantine Books' Ballantine Adult Fantasy series and was the only nonfiction entry in the series. The book was reprinted in 2024 by Wildside Press. It was among the earliest full-length critical works on fantasy literature and the history of the genre. It was the third of three similar studies by Carter, following Tolkien: A Look Behind "The Lord of the Rings" (1969) and Lovecraft: A Look Behind the "Cthulhu Mythos" (1972). These works, along with his editorial work on the Ballantine series, established Carter as an expert in the fantasy genre. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
