Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925-2006) was an Indonesian writer born in Blora, Java, then part of the Dutch East Indies, son of a teacher and a rice trader. Imprisoned repeatedly for his writing and politics, he composed his famous Buru Quartet while held in a prison camp, narrating it to fellow inmates. He died at 81.
