Philip Roth

2 series 7 books in order 1979–2000

Philip Milton Roth (March 19, 1933 – May 22, 2018) was an American novelist and short-story writer. His fiction often drew from his experiences in Newark, New Jersey, and explored themes of Jewish and American identity. Roth's work was noted for its autobiographical elements, its blending of reality and fiction, and its stylistic innovation. He gained recognition with the 1959 short story collection Goodbye, Columbus, which won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. He later achieved widespread success with Portnoy's Complaint. Roth frequently used the character Nathan Zuckerman as a literary alter ego, and in some works, a fictionalized version of himself served as the narrator. His novel The Plot Against America presented an alternate history of the United States.
