Moliere (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin) was a French playwright born in Paris in 1622 who founded the Illustrious Theater troupe in 1643 and toured the provinces for twelve years before returning to Paris in 1658 to perform for Louis XIV. He wrote The Pretentious Ladies and other plays for the Petit Bourbon and later the Palais Royal, dying in 1673 after collapsing during a performance of The Imaginary Invalid.
