Lawrence George Durrell was a British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer who was born in Jalandhar, India, on 27 February 1912 and died in Sommières, France, on 7 November 1990. He lived much of his life abroad and rejected being defined solely by his British nationality, identifying instead as a cosmopolitan. His most famous work is The Alexandria Quartet, a series of four novels published between 1957 and 1960. The first and best-known novel in the series is Justine. Durrell was the eldest brother of Gerald Durrell, a naturalist and writer.
