Kathleen O'Neal Gear, an American writer born in 1954, is one of six children born in Tulare, California, to parents who left Oklahoma and Arkansas during the Dust Bowl. She earned degrees from California State University at Bakersfield and Chico, studied at UCLA and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and worked as Wyoming State Historian and as an archaeologist for Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska before writing full-time.
