John Dickson Carr, an American writer who lived from 1906 to 1977, was a highly regarded mystery writer, though he spent most of the 1930s and 1940s living and marrying in England, where he set many of his books. His two main detectives, Dr. Fell and Sir Henry Merrivale, were both very English.
