Javier Marías Franco was a Spanish writer, translator, and editor born in Madrid on September 20, 1951, and died there on September 11, 2022. He was a full member of the Royal Spanish Academy from 2008 until his death. His novel Corazón tan blanco, published in 1992, combined elements of fiction and essay and achieved widespread critical and public acclaim. It was translated into dozens of languages and became a key example of generic hybridism. His subsequent novel, Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí, published in 1994, won major literary awards in Europe and America, including the Rómulo Gallegos Prize and the Fastenrath Prize from the Royal Spanish Academy.
