Born in 1975, Hugh Howey spent his early years in primary education, where he explored interests such as soccer, chess, and writing. After leaving school, he became interested in computers and worked briefly as a repair technician. He later moved to Charleston, South Carolina, and attended college. To save money, he purchased a small sailboat and lived on it, nearly dying while transporting it from Baltimore. After his junior year of college, he sailed south, experiencing life on the islands, surviving two hurricanes, and re-stepping his mast with dwindling funds. He eventually returned to the United States and became a yacht captain, working on boats across the East Coast and Caribbean. He met his wife during this time and settled down, purchasing a house. He began writing stories inspired by his experiences and the women in his life. His Wool series, beginning as a novelette, became a success in 2011, leading to an omnibus edition that ranked highly on Amazon and was optioned for a film. He currently lives in Jupiter, Florida, with his wife and dog.
