Hilaire Belloc was a French-English writer born in La Celle-Saint-Cloud, France, who was raised in Slindon, West Sussex, after his father's death, served in the French Army, and studied history at Oxford. He served as a Liberal MP for Salford South from 1906 to 1910 and edited the war journal Land and Water from 1914 to 1920.
