Abraham Grace Merritt (1884–1943) was born in Beverly, New Jersey. In 1894 he moved with his family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked to become a lawyer but instead became a journalist. In 1912 he became assistant editor of The American Weekly until 1937, when he became its editor. He also wrote fiction, including eight novels.
