Amelia Peabody and her husband, Radcliffe Emerson, return to Egypt at the end of 1914 for another season of archaeological work. Their son, Ramses, faces criticism from the British community for his pacifist views, while the nationalist figure el Wardani is stirring unrest in Cairo. After helping el Wardani escape a police operation, the family becomes deeply involved in the growing political conflict. Ramses' hidden role in the situation threatens their safety. Meanwhile, an unusual sculpture found at a Giza dig suggests the return of Amelia's old enemy, Sethos, the Master Criminal, adding danger and mystery to the unfolding events.
