LAPD lieutenant Milo Sturgis agonizes over unsolved cases such as Katherine Hennepin, strangled and stabbed in her home, whose sole suspect had a solid alibi even Alex Delaware's insight could not overcome. He then moves to the murder of Ursula Corey, an executed divorcée, whose case reveals eerie echoes of the earlier unsolved crime.
