Milo Sturgis summons psychologist Alex Delaware to a gallery where a young artist has been garroted on the night of her first major showing, with no obvious motive and a lurid staging suggesting a serial killer. The case links to the murder of blues guitarist Baby Boy Lee and leads investigators through a trail involving an alias-shrouded fanzine critic and eventually Alex's ex-lover Robin Castagna.
