Commander Dalgliesh investigates a murder at the Dupayne, a private museum on the edge of Hampstead Heath that focuses on the years 1919-1939. The museum features exhibits from notorious murder cases of the inter-war period, and the current crime closely mirrors one of the displayed cases. All individuals associated with the museum—trustees, staff, and volunteers—have the means and opportunity to commit the crime. One of them also possesses the ruthlessness to kill repeatedly. The story is a novel by P. D. James.
