First published in 1899, The Amateur Cracksman is a collection of stories featuring the gentleman thief A. J. Raffles. Written by E. W. Hornung, the book introduced Raffles, a popular sportsman who secretly commits burglaries with the help of his friend Bunny Manders. Raffles is known for his skill and his fascination with valuable jewelry. The stories follow his attempts to outwit Inspector Mackenzie of Scotland Yard. The Amateur Cracksman was the first of several works featuring Raffles, including two other story collections and a novel.
