Romance, a would-be hit play about an actress stalked by a knife-wielding attacker, becomes real when the leading lady is attacked outside the theater and later stabbed to death. As A.D.A. Nellie Brand pursues a murder conviction, Detective Steve Carella believes she has the wrong suspect and clashes with Fat Ollie Weeks, while Bert Kling, interviewing witnesses, finds himself falling for a doctor who is a deputy chief surgeon.
